My Old House

1964 All Brick Ranch on a Basement

My kitchen was my pride and joy! I started with a room that had been remodeled in 1980 and was all about oak and harvest gold. My stove actually had an analog clock! I did some of the work myself, but I've yet to get into tile work, so I hired that done, also I had an electrician run a gas line to the stove so I could switch from electric to gas, and I had him add a few outlets as well.

The cabinets were in great shape, they were just UGLY!!  I had never refinished cabinets before, but I figured I couldn't make them any worse than they already were! The process took me a week. I did everything myself. I de-greased, then sanded, then primed, then painted, then glazed. It turned out even better than I had hoped!

I cut the wood panels out of the upper cabinet doors and replaced with pieces of glass I had cut at Lowe's. I painted the cabinet interior the same green color I used on the walls.

I ordered this custom pantry door online. I think it's soooo cute! The floor is 16x16 travertine tile. The rug came from Overstock.com. They have super deals on rugs!

These are snap shots of my kiddos taken many, many years ago! I made them into black and white 8x10's for instant art!

By the way... it looked like this when I started...

Very solid, sturdy cabinetry- but certainly not gonna win any beauty contests!

Vinyl flooring in the 1980's color of the year: harvest gold! The ceiling fan was installed to operate only by the pull chain. There was no wall switch. I also had to remedy this in order to install a chandelier. Just to up the level of difficulty of this project, there is no access to this area of the ceiling from the attic above. My worker had to cut the drywall from the area where the fixture was installed all the way over the the wall where the switch is located to run the wires, then patch up all the drywall. Ugh. This project was a LOT of trouble!
